Cal Poly Football Adds NFL Veteran as Running Backs Coach

Cal Poly Football is adding more NFL experience to its coaching staff with the hire of former NFL running back Steve Broussard as the new running backs coach.

Head Coach Paul Wulff announced the hiring of Coach Broussard, moving Asa Jackson to cornerbacks coach, a position he played in the NFL for six years and coached for the Mustangs in 2022.

“Coach Broussard has tremendous playing and coaching experience at all levels,” said Cal Poly head football coach Paul Wulff. “During his career he has excelled at every place he’s been. Steve also has recruited southern California for several years. He will help mentor and develop our players at a high level. I feel fortunate to be able to add him to our staff and program.”

NFL Veteran Brings Wealth of Experience

Broussard was a running back in the NFL for nine seasons, playing for the Atlanta Falcons for four years (1990-93), Cincinnati Bengals for one (1994), and finishing out his career with four years with the Seattle Seahawks (1995-98). He played in 121 games with 2,625 total yards and 19 touchdowns. Was a part of the Seahawks 35th Anniversary Team in 2010.

College Football Star

Broussard played college football at Washington State University alongside Wulff for four years before being drafted 20th overall in the 1990 draft by the Atlanta Falcons. At Washington State he was the second ever player in conference history to lead the league in receiving yards one year and rushing the next. In his senior season he led the Pac-10 in all-purpose yards, averaging 162.7 yards per game.

Coaching Career

Following his playing career, Broussard transitioned into coaching at both the high school and college levels starting in 2000. Throughout his career, he has spent several years as a head coach and coordinator at the high school level.

His first Division I job was as the running backs coach and wide receivers coach at Portland State from 2007-2008. He then became the running backs coach and special teams coordinator at Washington State University from 2007-2009. After that, he went to Arizona State University as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator from 2010-2011. Then became the running backs coach at UCLA from 2012-2013. Was the running backs coach at SMU in 2014. Most recently was the Offensive Coordinator at Montana State University-North in 2023.

Personal Life

Steve is married to Tamara Broussard and has three kids. He was born and raised in Pasadena, Calif. and attended Manual Arts High school in Los Angeles.
