Carson Wentz Finds New Home as Patrick Mahomes’ Backup in Kansas City
Veteran quarterback Carson Wentz has agreed to a one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz. The 31-year-old will serve as the clear No. 2 QB behind superstar Patrick Mahomes.
Wentz’s one-year deal has a base value of $3.325 million, including $2.2M fully guaranteed and up to $1.1M in per-game active roster bonuses. The North Dakota State product will be looking to prove himself as a reliable backup in Kansas City.
Carson Wentz drops back to pass
The move to Kansas City marks a new chapter in Wentz’s NFL career. After being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles with the No. 2 overall pick in 2016, Wentz quickly established himself as a capable quarterback. He performed well in his first two seasons with the Eagles, throwing for 33 touchdowns against just seven interceptions in his sophomore campaign.
However, Wentz’s 2017 season was cut short when he suffered a torn ACL. The Eagles went on to win Super Bowl LII with backup quarterback Nick Foles leading the way.
Wentz had stints with the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders, but his tenure with both teams ended after just one season. He spent most of the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Rams, where he saw limited action as the backup to starting quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Despite his limited playing time, Wentz proved he is still a capable signal-caller. He filled in for Stafford in the regular-season finale against the San Francisco 49ers and helped lead the Rams to a 21-20 win that earned them the sixth seed in the NFC playoffs.

Wentz threw for 163 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 17-of-24 passing. He also recorded team highs of 17 carries and 56 rushing yards with another score on the ground.
