The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for a crucial offseason, and it’s clear that quarterback Dak Prescott is their top priority. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Cowboys are looking to extend Prescott’s contract before focusing on deals for linebacker Micah Parsons and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

The Cowboys are prioritizing Dak Prescott’s contract extension

Prescott, 30, is entering the final year of his four-year, $160 million contract, and the Cowboys know they need to lock him down for the long haul. With his impressive performance last season, where he threw for 4,516 yards and 36 touchdowns, it’s no surprise the Cowboys want to make him a priority.

“You’ve got Dak Prescott. The Cowboys have a world of problems here financially with three players they have to sign—Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb as well—but the feeling around the league and sources I’ve talked to is that they want to start with Dak,” Fowler said on SportsCenter.

The NFL quarterback market is heating up

The Cowboys have already exercised Parsons’ $21.3 million option, keeping him around for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Lamb, on the other hand, will be a free agent after this year. While the Cowboys have some breathing room with Parsons, they know they need to get all three players signed to new deals.

The art of contract negotiations in the NFL

Prioritizing Prescott makes sense, given his success in his eighth NFL season. At just 30 years old, he has plenty of good years left, and the Cowboys want to capitalize on that. However, when they do find an extension for Prescott, it will likely be a big one, considering the quarterback market over the past few years.

Luckily for Dallas, they’ll have $67.552 million in cap space next offseason, which should give them the flexibility to give Prescott a lucrative deal. However, it will still be a tricky task to find fitting deals for all three players.

The Cowboys will need to navigate the salary cap carefully

The Cowboys have their work cut out for them, but prioritizing Prescott is the right move. With his talent and leadership, he’s the key to their success in the coming years.
