Cowboys Experimenting with Deuce Vaughn at Slot Receiver
The Dallas Cowboys are always looking for ways to innovate and improve their offense. In their latest experiment, they’re trying out running back Deuce Vaughn at slot receiver. This new role could add some much-needed versatility to the Cowboys’ offense and give Vaughn more opportunities to shine.
Vaughn in action during practice
Vaughn, a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has been getting reps in the slot during voluntary organized team activities. This isn’t a completely new role for Vaughn, who played in the slot during his college days at Kansas State. “It was one of those things that we had kind of talked about at the end of the season last year,” Vaughn said in an interview. “Talking with [offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer] just a little bit about getting with the slot. Just learning a little bit more about it.”
Vaughn’s ability to play in the slot could add some much-needed depth to the Cowboys’ receiving corps. With CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks leading the way, Dallas is looking for bigger contributions from Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Brooks. The explosive KaVontae Turpin could also see more opportunities in the slot.
The Cowboys’ receiving corps is looking for a breakout season
Vaughn’s versatility could be a game-changer for the Cowboys. As a rookie, he only saw limited action, earning just 30 touches for 80 scrimmage yards. However, with his new role in the slot, he could see an increase in snaps and become a more valuable asset to the team.
“It’s one of the things I did in college and love to do,” said Vaughn. “Just adds another value.”
Currently, Vaughn is likely third on the Cowboys’ running back depth chart behind Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle, with Royce Freeman and Malik Davis also in the mix. However, his ability to play in the slot could give him an edge over his competitors.
The Cowboys’ running back depth chart is getting a shake-up
For now, Vaughn’s new role is just an experiment, but it could become a reality in the fall. If it does, it could be a game-changer for the Cowboys’ offense.
