Darren Waller Hangs Up His Cleats: A Look Back at the Tight End’s Nine-Year NFL Career
In a shocking turn of events, New York Giants tight end Darren Waller announced his retirement from the NFL on Sunday, bringing an end to his nine-year career in the league. The 31-year-old made the announcement on social media, citing a fading passion for the game.
“I’ve decided to retire from the game of football,” Waller wrote on Instagram. “To God: what a journey, and thank you. We took it way farther than I ever could have imagined! So grateful for all the ppl I’ve been able to connect and create memories with along the way. We still got plenty more life left to live. Love you all. Peace.”
Waller’s decision to retire comes after a tumultuous 18 months, which saw him traded from the Las Vegas Raiders to the Giants in March 2023. The tight end played 12 games for the Giants in 2023, but failed to live up to expectations, hauling in 52 catches for 552 yards and a touchdown.
A Pro Bowl appearance in his career, Waller’s retirement will save the Giants $11.6 million in cap money, while the team will take a $2.5 million hit in dead money.
Waller’s retirement marks the end of an era
Waller’s post-football life is already taking shape, with the tight end releasing music and hinting at a new career path. In a video on his YouTube channel, Waller expressed his excitement for the next chapter of his life.
The Giants, who drafted tight end Theo Johnson out of Penn State in April, appear to have prepared for Waller’s retirement. The team released a statement wishing Waller well, saying, “We have great respect for Darren as a person and player. We wish him nothing but the best.”
Waller’s time with the Giants was short-lived
As Waller embarks on this new journey, fans will undoubtedly remember his contributions to the NFL. From his Pro Bowl appearance to his time with the Raiders and Giants, Waller’s legacy will live on.
