The Gridiron Girls: New Mexico’s All-Girl Flag Football Team Takes the Field

As the sun sets over the desert skies of New Mexico, a group of determined young girls is gearing up to make history. The Twisted Sisters, one of the state’s first all-girl flag football teams, is headed to the NFL Flag Championship game in Ohio to represent the Denver Broncos. This is no small feat, especially considering the team’s humble beginnings.

Coach Tia Martinez, a passionate advocate for girls in sports, couldn’t be prouder of her team. “I wish I had this kind of opportunity when I was younger,” she says. “I would have definitely played in it.” Tia, along with her husband James, has built a popular league for boys, but it’s time for the girls to take center stage.

The NFL’s Flag Championship game is a big deal, and the Twisted Sisters are ready to put their skills to the test. The eight-girl squad will face off against other top teams from around the country, and they’re not intimidated. “We’re just as good as them,” says quarterback Adalyn Huizar. “We prove them wrong every single time.”

But getting to the championship game isn’t cheap. The team needs to raise $10,000 for the trip, and they’re counting on the support of local businesses and the community. You can contribute to their fundraising efforts here.

This isn’t just about the Twisted Sisters, though. This is about paving the way for girls everywhere who want to play football. “If we’re able to do this, we can make other girls’ dreams happen if they want to play football too,” says team member Vivianna Cadena.

The Road to the Championship

The Twisted Sisters have come a long way since their inception, and they’re not done yet. With the support of their community, they’re ready to take on the best of the best. “Us having this opportunity to go out of state is really big for us,” says quarterback Adrianna Orozco.

As the team prepares to take the field, they’re carrying the hopes and dreams of girls everywhere on their shoulders. Will they bring home the championship title? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain - the Twisted Sisters are making a statement.
