The Zone Blitz Defense

The zone blitz defense, created by LeBeau, is a legacy that will long outlive the great coach. It’s a defense that has been adopted by many teams and is still used today. LeBeau recalls seeing high school teams run the zone blitz and feeling a sense of pride.

“Sometimes I’ll go to high school games and I see them run a zone blitz,” he said. “And it gives you a pretty warm feeling.”

The 2008 Steelers Defense

LeBeau’s book focuses on the 2008 Steelers defense, which included one of the most well-known safeties in the NFL, Troy Polamalu. LeBeau describes Polamalu as a coach’s dream, able to do anything on the field.

“Troy could do anything,” LeBeau said. “A coach’s dream.”

Walking Down Memory Lane

LeBeau still keeps in touch with the team from the 2008 season, including Polamalu. He recalls the Super Bowl that season, where his defense almost gave away the game.

“I was walking on the sideline. I said, I can’t believe it,” LeBeau remembers. “I said, ‘We’re going to be remembered as a defense that blew the doggone Super Bowl game.’”

A Career Spanning 59 Years

LeBeau’s football career started in Ohio, where he played cornerback at Ohio State. He led the Buckeyes to the National Championship in 1957, an experience he still cherishes.

“It’s still unquestionably the most impactful thing that I have ever got to experience in my life is playing for Ohio State,” he said.

LeBeau played 14 years in the NFL, all with the Detroit Lions. He then went on to coach for 45 years, including 14 years as the defensive coordinator for the Steelers.
