Legendary Defensive Mastermind Monte Kiffin Passes Away at 84

Kiffin is perhaps best known for his 13-year stint as the defensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he helped the franchise win its first Super Bowl title. Under the tenure of coaches Tony Dungy and Jon Gruden, Kiffin’s defenses consistently ranked among the league’s best, and he is credited with creating the ultra-successful Tampa 2 defensive scheme.

During his time with the Bucs, Kiffin worked with some of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, including Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, and Ronde Barber. In 2002, the Buccaneers had the league’s top-ranked defense, which propelled them to a Super Bowl victory over the Oakland Raiders.
A Coaching Legacy
Kiffin’s impact on the NFL goes beyond his time with the Buccaneers. He coached for several other teams, including the Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, and Dallas Cowboys. After leaving the Buccaneers, Kiffin worked alongside his son, Lane, at various college stops, including Tennessee, USC, Florida Atlantic, and Ole Miss.
