NFL Today Shake-Up at CBS: Matt Ryan Joins as Boomer Esiason, Phil Simms Exit

The NFL Today studio show on CBS is undergoing a significant revamp, with former star quarterback Matt Ryan joining the program, and Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms departing.

The NFL Today studio show is getting a fresh new look

When the NFL season kicks off this fall, viewers will see Ryan, known for his time with the Atlanta Falcons, paired with James Brown, Nate Burleson, Bill Cowher, and JJ Watt.

“Matt had an outstanding first year at CBS Sports, excelling as both a studio and game analyst,” said David Berson, in a statement. “He is the consummate team player and a Hall of Fame person. We love the chemistry he has with the studio crew and we’re excited to see him entertain NFL fans and share his passion, insight, and perspective alongside JB, Nate, Coach, and JJ.”

Burleson has renewed his deal to stay with CBS Mornings as part of the proceedings. Nate is a vital part of the CBS Mornings team and we are excited that he will continue in this role for years to come.

The NFL Today debuted in 1975 and was the first live studio show of its kind. CBS is tweaking the program, following similar changes made at NBC’s Football Night in America, and big talent shifts seen in the on-air teams at NBC, ESPN, and Fox.

A look back at the history of The NFL Today

CBS Sports has been downshifting Simms for some time, first moving him off of his role as lead game analyst in favor of Tony Romo. He worked in that role for nearly two decades. Esiason, meanwhile, is the longest-tenured among the analysts at The NFL Today. He is expected to continue with his Boomer and Gio Show on CBS Sports Network.

The NFL Today has been a staple of CBS Sports for decades, and with these changes, the show is poised to continue entertaining and informing NFL fans for years to come.
