The NFL offseason has been filled with excitement and drama, and we’re not even close to the start of the regular season. From surprising roster cuts to intriguing coaching hires, there’s been no shortage of news to keep fans on the edge of their seats.
Roster Shake-Ups
The Atlanta Falcons have been busy, signing OT Jaryd Jones-Smith and DT Prince Emili, while cutting OT Nolan Potter and DT Willington Previlon. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns have waived DE Lonnie Phelps, who was arrested and charged with drunken driving on Wednesday night.
The Denver Broncos have made some significant moves, hiring former Stanford head coach David Shaw as senior personnel executive. They’ve also signed DT Dondrea Tillman and cut LB Alec Mock. The Green Bay Packers have claimed K James Turner off waivers from the Detroit Lions, while releasing K Jack Podlesny.
Coaching Carousel
The New England Patriots are entering a new era, with Jerod Mayo taking over as head coach after Bill Belichick’s departure. Mayo was previously the inside linebackers coach for five seasons, during which the defense finished in the top-10 in total defense four times.
Quarterback Battles
The Patriots have also traded QB Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars, ending his three-year tenure with the team. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, veteran QB Jacoby Brissett is -350 to be the Week 1 starter, while Mayo is at +255.
Tight End Legends
Shannon Sharpe, one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, is known for his trash-talking skills on the field. But did you know that he once took a red telephone on the sideline and said into the receiver: “Mr. President, we need the National Guard. We need as many men as you can spare because we are killing the Patriots…. They need emergency help, please.” (The Patriots advanced to the Super Bowl that year, and Sharpe later apologized for the incident.)
