No More Confusion: Josh Allen is Now Joshua Hines-Allen

The NFL’s version of the classic Abbott and Costello joke has finally come to an end. Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Josh Allen has changed his name to Joshua Hines-Allen, eliminating the confusion with the Buffalo Bills’ quarterback.

Joshua Hines-Allen

Joshua Hines-Allen, the reigning Pro Bowler, announced the name change on his social media platforms, citing his desire to honor the maternal side of his family. His sister, Myisha Hines-Allen, a forward for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, has worn the ‘Hines-Allen’ surname on the back of her jerseys for years.

“Legacy is forever, and I’m proud to carry that tradition on the back of my jersey, following in the footsteps of my family, who have donned the Hines-Allen last name with so much pride and joy.”

The name change is significant not only because of Joshua Hines-Allen’s stature within the NFL but also because he previously shared a name with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. The similarities between the two were uncanny, with both being taken at No. 7 overall in back-to-back NFL Drafts (2018 and 2019). They have played against each other twice, with Joshua Hines-Allen’s team taking each contest.

The change will allow each player to cement their own legacies and no longer be intrinsically linked to each other. Josh Allen, with his NFL-record four consecutive seasons with more than 40 total touchdowns, and Joshua Hines-Allen, with his 45 career sacks, are objectively two of the best in the league at their respective positions.

The name change is a heartwarming gesture that will allow fans to talk about each player individually without mentioning the other. It’s a new chapter for both Josh Allen and Joshua Hines-Allen, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for these two NFL stars.
