The Ceiling is Higher: James Conner Aims to Build on Breakout Season
After finally hitting the 1,000-yard mark in his seventh season, Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner is far from satisfied. In fact, he considers it the bare minimum for his performance going forward.
“That’s the floor,” Conner said. “I want that to be the lowest I rush for in my career going forward.”
Conner’s remarks are a testament to his unwavering dedication to improvement. Despite missing four games due to an MCL sprain, he managed to rush for 1,040 yards and seven touchdowns on 208 carries, averaging a career-high 5.0 yards per carry.

The Cardinals offense was revitalized when Conner was healthy, and he proved to be an ideal fit in offensive coordinator Drew Petzing’s scheme. According to Pro Football Focus, Conner ranked first in yards after contact per attempt and second in missed forced tackles among running backs with at least 200 carries.
A New Dimension
But Conner doesn’t just want to stay above the 1,000-yard plateau; he aims to increase his involvement in the passing game. After catching only 27 passes for 165 yards and two scores last season, he’s been working hard during the OTA period to improve his receiving skills.
“I feel like I’m capable of making plays in the passing game,” Conner said. “So, that’s why we’re working. That’s why we’re here in the OTA period working on it and carrying it through training camp and into the season, so challenge accepted.”

The addition of rookie Trey Benson in the third round brings a new dynamic to the Cardinals’ backfield. Benson’s burst and pass-catching ability could see him contributing to the offense in various ways, but Conner remains confident in his abilities and is ready to take on the challenge.
The Future is Bright
With Conner’s newfound determination and the influx of fresh talent, the Cardinals’ offense is poised for a breakout season. As Conner continues to work towards surpassing his career highs, Arizona fans can expect an exciting and unpredictable ride.
