The Buffalo Bills’ 2024 offseason has been marked by a departure from their usual strategy of making big splashes in the market. Instead, the team has opted to subtract high-profile names from their roster, trading away players like Stefon Diggs and parting ways with stalwarts like Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, and Tre’Davious White.

This shift in strategy signals a philosophical change for the team, as they focus on building a stronger foundation for sustainable success rather than going all-in for a Super Bowl win each year.

One NFL writer, Gary Davenport, has suggested that the Bills should reconsider their approach and make a blockbuster trade to land Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa. Davenport proposes that the Bills trade a third-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to the Chargers in exchange for Bosa.

“Getting Bosa’s contract on the books would take some wrangling, but Brandon Beane is as crafty a GM as there is in the NFL. It’s a risky play—but one that could pay off big if the Bills get the Bosa who made three straight Pro Bowls from 2019-2021.” - Gary Davenport

The suggestion is logical, as the Bills could use some help at defensive end. Starting edges Greg Rousseau and A.J. Epenesa have shown flashes of brilliance but haven’t established themselves among the upper echelon of NFL pass rushers. Von Miller, the NFL’s active all-time sack leader, is coming off a 2023 campaign in which he tallied just three tackles and zero sacks.

However, Bosa’s injury history and current cap hit of $26 million (which jumps to $36 million next year) make the trade less feasible for the Bills. With roughly $10 million in available salary cap space, it would take more than “some wrangling” for Buffalo to fit Bosa on their payroll.

In a vacuum, the trade suggestion is logical, but given the Bills’ current status as a future-centric team with little immediate financial wiggle room, it’s simply not feasible. Buffalo would likely be better off keeping the third-round pick and attempting to land a future contributor than swapping it for an aging pass-rusher with just a few years left in the tank.
