The NFL’s 18-Game Schedule Debate: What’s Holding Up an Agreement?
The NFL’s proposed 18-game schedule has sparked a heated debate among players, with some supporting the idea and others expressing concerns about player safety and the impact on their bodies. In a recent survey, 46% of players were in favor of an 18-game schedule with stipulations, while 8% voted yes without stipulations. However, 19% of players were completely against the idea, citing concerns about player safety and the potential for increased injuries.
Players weigh in on the 18-game schedule
Pittsburgh Steelers safety Damontae Kazee is open to the idea of an 18-game schedule, as long as the pay correlates with the extra game. “If they take out a preseason game, I’m OK with that as long as the pay correlates with what they’re asking us to do,” Kazee said.
Others, like Steelers teammate DeShon Elliott, are more skeptical. “They’re not paying us enough money already,” Elliott said. “They’re stingy with their money, so they want to make us play 18 games, as a player union, we should get way more money than what we’re getting – and not just the top guys.”
The debate highlights the complex issues surrounding player safety, compensation, and the demands of a longer season. While some players see the benefits of an 18-game schedule, others are more cautious, citing the physical toll of a longer season.
The NFL commissioner’s proposal sparks debate
The NFLPA would have leverage in any negotiation with league owners over an 18-game schedule, and the union would undoubtedly come up with its own wish list to facilitate acceptance of the additional game. This could include a revamped offseason workout schedule as well as an improved revenue split.
As the debate continues, one thing is clear: any decision to expand the regular season would require careful consideration of the complex issues at play.
