Trevor Lawrence: The Face of the Jaguars’ Future

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made a significant commitment to their star quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, by signing him to a five-year, $275 million contract extension. This deal, which includes $200 million guaranteed, solidifies Lawrence’s position as the face of the franchise for years to come.

The Jaguars’ decision to extend Lawrence’s contract was always expected, especially after they exercised the fifth-year option on his rookie season ahead of the 2024 campaign. The bigger question was whether Lawrence would get close to the astronomical extensions handed out to other young stars at the position recently, such as Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, and Jalen Hurts.

“The #Jaguars have reached a deal with their star QB Trevor Lawrence. Sources say they are giving the former No. 1 pick a 5-year extension worth $275M — $55M a year — with $200M guaranteed and $142M fully.” - Ian Rapoport

Lawrence’s agent, Jay Courie of @mgcsports, negotiated the deal. This move is a significant investment in the quarterback’s future, especially after his disappointing 2023 season. Lawrence battled through injuries throughout the year and missed the first game of his career, following 49 consecutive starts. His numbers declined to 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions, while completing 65.6 percent of his passes and taking 35 sacks.

The Jaguars opened the 2023 season strong, going 8-3 and looking like legitimate contenders in the AFC. However, a four-game losing streak and Lawrence’s injury issues turned a promising season into disappointment. The team finished 9-8 on the year (8-8 in Lawrence’s starts) and missed out on the postseason following a Week 18 loss against the lowly Tennessee Titans.

Despite not meeting expectations just yet, the Jaguars clearly believe in Lawrence as their franchise quarterback. Given some of the rough quarterback play elsewhere in the NFL, it’s no surprise that the Jaguars paid up to keep him around.

The Jaguars’ commitment to Lawrence is a significant step forward for the franchise, and it will be exciting to see how he responds to this new deal. With this extension, the Jaguars have made it clear that they believe in Lawrence as their leader for years to come.
